Announcing a Blackletter Workshop with Barbara Brandt! Saturday, May 17, 2008
North Miami Beach Senior Center
17051 Northeast 19th Avenue
North Miami Beach, FL 33162
Blackletter is a strong lettering style distinguished by its condensed nature in which the white spaces are almost evenly balanced against the black strokes. Blackletter is traditionally used on certificates, diplomas, legal documents, and awards, but because of its dense texture and sometimes illegibility, it translates beautifully to modern pieces. It also combines well with almost any hand. Though it may look like a difficult hand to write, blackletter is relatively easy to learn due to its heavy parallel strokes and close, even spacing.
Supplies: Black ink-dense (sumi), C-0 speedball or 5mm Brause, 14x17 bond paper (bring a T-square if you use bond) or 11x17 graph paper (bring a 16 inch ruler if you use graph paper), and a drawing board.
Registration: By mail only to be post-marked by May 5th . We must have a minimum of 10 to hold the class. Participants will be contacted if the class does not fill. Send your checks payable to the South Florida Calligraphy Guild, to B. Klainbaum, 100 Bayview Dr. 706, Sunny Isles, Fl. 33160.
Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early before class begins.
About the South Florida Calligraphy Guild
The South Florida Calligraphy Guild was founded in February, 1981 with the desire to unite in the spirit
of camraderie all calligraphers and calligraphiles. The guild is a non-profit Florida corporation dedicated
to originating, supporting and promoting activities and communication in the fields of calligraphy, lettering
and the book arts.
